If you come from a lower class background in the UK, it’s fairly firmly drilled into you from about the age of ten that pregnancy means your life is over. The state school system starts early with sex ed, and the main take-away is that pregnancy is bad, do everything that you can to avoid it. The indoctrination was so firmly planted in my mind that when I “fell” pregnant eight months ago, my first thought was that I had failed. This was despite being years ahead of my self-imposed career-schedule, being a home-owner, having been in a loving and stable relationship for six years. My gut reaction was still that I had failed.
